Progress in Oral Health Access in the Philippines

In a significant advancement for public health, the persistent efforts of UPDAA president Dr. Noel Vallesteros and his team from the Department of Health (DOH) have led to the inclusion of an oral health package in PhilHealth. Dr. Vallesteros, who serves as the chief of the Oral Health and Nutrition Division, worked closely with dental professionals from various sectors including the UPDAA, the PDA, public health dentists, etc. to realize this long-awaited initiative.

Today marks a pivotal moment as it has been officially announced that oral prophylaxis and dental check-ups will now be part of the Routine Preventive Care Benefit Package for Oral Health for Filipinos. This inclusion is expected to enhance access to vital oral health services, thereby improving overall health outcomes for the population.

Various stakeholders who have championed this advocacy are celebrating this victory, recognizing that financial support is crucial in addressing oral health issues. By incorporating these services, the financing aspect will help tackle the social determinants that impact oral health in the community.

This initiative is rooted in the framework of the Universal Health Care (UHC) Act, which was signed into law in 2019. While the DOH plays a leading role in implementing UHC, PhilHealth serves as the attached agency responsible for delivering these essential services.

Overall, this development represents a significant step forward in the quest for universal health care for all Filipinos, ensuring that oral health is no longer a neglected component of public health.
